Quarrying is mainly used in the production of building and construction materials, such as solid stone or crushed stone as aggregate, or raw material for processes such as cement production.

Technically, quarrying is usually only used when raw materials of suitable quality and size cannot be obtained economically by other means.

 For example, because natural sand and gravel are not always available, much of the world’s annual aggregate output is generated from stone mining and processing.
